The people and the representation in Bolivian historiography and
politics, 1825-1922.

Abstract: The evolution of
the Bolivian historiography since its birth in the middle of the 19th
century was intimately connected to the social thought in its search for the
creation of the modern nation and conscious citizens. The first historians
emphasized in the past the examples of the individual elevation to the
citizen’s standard, the cases when plebs could achieve the status of the
sovereign people and believed that the education was the right way to the citizen’s
virtue. However, in the beginning of the 20th century the Bolivian
writers and historians considered that it was necessary to destroy the
polyethnicity and "decadent” indigenous and mestizo races in order to
create the Nation; it was seen as a part of the Europeanization of
Bolivia, as the only way to the civilized world and industrial society
